Love your blog and get the posts by email. Just wanted to post a heads up that they recently tested honey from all sorts of sources (big box stores, natural stores, drugstores, etc.) and they found that 100% of the drugstore honey was counterfeit. It’s a big problem now with China selling their “honey” to third party sources who then “ultra-filter” it, which removes all of the pollen and all of the means of identifying the source or properly testing it.
Chinese honey has been found to be contaminated with illegal animal antibiotics that are occasionally fatal to a small percentage of the population, along with tons of other toxins. They also commonly dilute their “honey” with watered down corn syrup and other fake sugars.
The bottom line is that dirt cheap honey is dirt cheap for a reason, and it’s not usually really honey (and certainly not 100% safe honey). We buy ours from local beekeepers and get it pretty inexpensively, and we know exactly where it’s from. That also helps support local families, which I like.
They also found that the honey from natural stores like Whole Foods and Trader Joe’s was the real stuff.
