When Your Gluten-Free Kids Cheat

Gluten-Free-Kids

I’m guest posting over at Gluten-Free Homemaker today on the topic “When Your Gluten-Free Kids Cheat”.

“If you have gluten-free kids above kindergarten age, you can be guaranteed that at some point, they will “cheat,” or consume foods that contain gluten. Kayla has historically been very good about not doing this. She typically gets so sick from eating anything containing gluten, that she almost goes off the deep end the other way, questioning everything.

So I was very surprised when, on the night of a sleepover with Grandma, Kayla came home from school with a stomachache.”

Meet Cassidy: Our Newest Family Member

2013-0430 (3)

We have a new family member! Kayla has been wanting a dog for so long, probably years, since our last dog passed away. With the difficulty of this move for Kayla, we promised her that as soon as we could after moving, we would find her a new friend.

We went to the Humane League and found Cassidy, a sweet border collie mix. She is so playful and wants nothing more than to snuggle up to you or run with you.

We surprised Kayla after school. She didn’t know we were going to pick Cassidy up, and she was here when Kayla got off the bus.

So much fun!

Finally! Some Pictures from this Past Week

2013-0423 (4)

I know I have been very remiss in getting any pictures posted of our recent move. That is because we have been so crazy, just trying to get our lives in order. But I feel like FINALLY we might be settling into a semblance of a routine. There will be more pictures coming, but for now I thought you might enjoy seeing what our yard looked like when we moved in! The house was vacant for about a year, so we had a year’s worth of leaves in the yard.

We back up to woods, so we raked all the leaves into huge piles on tarps, then dragged the tarps into the woods and dumped all the leaves down the mountain. So much fun! ;)

Hopefully my blog will be getting into a bit more of my regular routine soon. I know I have been terribly negligent on some of your favorite features, like Cooking With Kayla and Our Weekly Menu Plans, simply because we weren’t doing those things ourselves! But I am going to be getting our family back into our routine, so hopefully my blog will follow.

Thank you all so much for your patience with me during this crazy but exciting time in our lives! And, keep an eye out for more pictures soon!

Moving With Our Gluten-Free Kids

I’m guest posting over at The Gluten Free Homemaker today on moving with gluten-free kids.

“Our family’s adventure over the last few months has been a long distance move across the state with both of our gluten-free kids! This has been exciting (and kind of crazy!) for us, with several long road trips to go house searching, starting a new job for my hubby, lots of packing, what seems like millions of phone calls and emails, the stress of the mortgage process (anyone who has ever bought a house will know what I mean), and handling the tumbling emotions of two small munchkins.”

No Cooking With Kayla Today + New Bed

2013-0329

Well folks, there will be no Cooking With Kayla today. Kayla spent the day with friends, and I spent the day putting together Hannah’s new “big girl bed”! She was a little sad to see her crib go, but very happy to bounce on her new bed. I guess my baby is officially a big girl now!

Our Chick-fil-A Gluten-Free Experience!

2013-0319 (7)

Did you know Chick-fil-A has gluten-free menu items? Well, I didn’t, but I was very happy to be enlightened! We recently (should I say finally!) got a Chick-fil-A restaurant in Lancaster County, PA, and I was cordially invited to come out to one of their family nights and experience some on-the-house gluten-free menu items, then tell my blog readers about the experience!

Chick-fil-A has several family events throughout the month. I didn’t know about any of these, so I’m guessing most people don’t! Each location holds different events. You can search for your particular location by zip code, click “Visit Us Online”, then click on the Events tab to find special events at your location. At the Lancaster Lincoln Highway East location, the special events include a Come and Play Day (2nd and 4th Tuesdays and Wednesdays of the month from 9:30-10:30 a.m.) and Family Nights (3rd Tuesday of each month from 4:30-7:30 p.m.). There are also several other different events each month.

Chick-fil-A was generous enough to offer us meals “on the house” as a thank-you for giving our opinion to my readers. I ordered the grilled nuggets for both girls, with applesauce for Hannah and waffle fries for Kayla. I was told that the fries are fried separately from any breaded items, and the chicken was grilled on a grill that no breaded items touched. Both girls got chocolate milk with their meals.

The nuggets were tender and delicious, the waffle fries were great, and everything disappeared fast! Then the girls got down to playing and crafting. The Family Night we attended was a “Spring has Sprung” theme, and they had flower pots for the kiddos to decorate. Kayla and Hannah both decorated their flower pots and added their flowers. Then they got busy playing in the play area, and I didn’t see them for quite a while.  :)

After each child completed their flower pot, they got to take it back up front and show it in order to snag a FREE cone or bowl of ice cream (we of course chose the bowl)!

It was such a fun night for the girls, and we felt comfortable eating the food, as we could tell that a lot of care had been put into making sure cross-contamination did not occur. Plus, no one got sick!

Go here for Chick-fil-A’s gluten statement and a listing of gluten-free menu items. Make sure to read it carefully, to ensure it’s a good fit for your family!

My family was given free meals in exchange for an accurate review of their Family Night and gluten-free menu items. We were not otherwise reimbursed. All opinions are those of me and my family. Please see my full Disclosure Policy here

Gratitude: A New Perspective

2013-0126 (2)

I’m guest posting over at The Gluten Free Homemaker today about our recent adventure with appendicitis. Here’s a portion of the post:

Our family had an adventure this past week. After a long day of continuous pain and vomiting, my daughter Kayla was diagnosed with appendicitis and had an emergency appendectomy. The entire ordeal was difficult and of course stressful, but through the long, chaotic two days of emergency room, surgery, then hospital recovery, a different perspective began to emerge for me. It was gratitude.

Cooking With Your Gluten-Free Kids

2012-0413 (4)

I’m guest posting over at The Gluten-Free Homemaker today on Cooking with Your Gluten-Free Kids. Here’s a snippet:

“I am the type of person who doesn’t like anyone in my kitchen. I have things the way I want them, I know where things belong, and I just feel comfortable there. I don’t like to be tripping over other people in my kitchen, as my husband can attest to when he tries to help me. ;)

But lately I have begun to realize how important it is to allow my children to “help” in the kitchen.”

Gluten-Free Kids and the Holidays

2012-1207 (7)

With the holidays comes ample opportunity for frustration when you’re living gluten-free, especially when there are gluten-free kids involved. With the holidays come the parties and family gatherings, and with family gatherings, of course comes food! There’s nothing quite like walking into someone else’s home to find tables spread out with food, most of which your child will not be able to touch.
